Exploring Art in Barcelona
Barcelona's art, rooted back to the time of the Romans, continues to flourish in our current century. In Barcelona, one will find architecture and buildings spanning eras of the city's 2000 year old history. Between the 19th and 20th century, Barcelona witnessed a golden period in arts in which the great Catalan Modernism originated and developed. While the Spanish Civil War ended with the rise to power of the dictator Franco who destroyed the hopes for an independent Catalonia, Barcelona's art lived. Furthermore, countless influential artists in Barcelona are noted today such as Antoni Gaudi and Pablo Picasso, both of whom now have numerous parks and museums dedicated to their work. Such architecture serves as famous landmarks, particularly for tourists attractions. In the modern era, particularly the Olympic Games in 1992, led to the construction of many modern and beautiful buildings and architecture. Arguably, this finally gave Barcelona recognition as a great European city, the great city Barcelona is still world-renowned for in the current day. Exploring Media in Barcelona Barcelona newspapers and classifieds are in the same realm as what one would expect and are very interesting and beneficial to explore. The La Vanguardia Digital is Barcelona's leading daily, with a commendable online edition as well. Inclusive of excellent culture, science and sport sections, it simply lacks local and international news. Another news site, El Periódico, beyond its news, is particularly interesting in its interactive sections, with 360 degree postcards of Barcelona. 20 Minutes is handed our free in Barcelona every weekday morning, and is Barcelona's last surviving "freebie" paper. This newspaper shares content with editions for other cities in Spain, and the content on Barcelona tends to be in Catalan rather than Spanish, though not exclusively so. El Mundo Deportivo is Barcelona's most popular sports paper and is to be found virtually in its entirely online. While it is rabidly pro-Barca, anti-Real Madrid, it has decent coverage of Spanish and European football and decent range of other sports, notably basketball, cycling, and Formula 1, arguably the most popular sports in Spain. Sport is Barcelona's other sports paper. Like El-Mundo Deportivo, it is fanatically pro-Barca to the extent that what it reports on Spanish football lacks a certain amount of credibility. Beyond its extensive coverage of Spanish football, it also covers basketball, cycling, Formula 1, handball, and roller-hockey. Lastly, the Metropolitan is available in its entirely on its website. It carries a large amount of articles on local culture, and has a good section on places outside of Barcelona, particular interesting to anyone thinking of coming to live in the city. While these are among the most popular and well-known publications in Barcelona, numerous more exist. |
